Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique that combines a powerful
magnet with an advanced computer system and radio waves to produce
detailed images or "slices" of the human body. MRI does not use
radiation, is painless and has no known side effects.
A complete MRI
can take 20 minutes to 1 ½ hours depending on what area is being
scanned. The patient is placed on a padded table that moves into
the MRI scanner. It is important to remain still on the table because
the slightest movement may interfere with the quality of the image.
As the MRI begins
to scan you may here a "knocking" sound. This sound is normal and
should not be of concern to the patient. We invite you to bring
along your own CD or tape selection to listen on our stereo system
during the exam. After the exam a radiologist will prepare a report
for your physician that will be forwarded to his or her office.
