Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique that combines a powerful magnet with an advanced computer system and radio waves to produce detailed images or "slices" of the human body. MRI does not use radiation, is painless and has no known side effects.

A complete MRI can take 20 minutes to 1 ½ hours depending on what area is being scanned. The patient is placed on a padded table that moves into the MRI scanner. It is important to remain still on the table because the slightest movement may interfere with the quality of the image.

As the MRI begins to scan you may here a "knocking" sound. This sound is normal and should not be of concern to the patient. We invite you to bring along your own CD or tape selection to listen on our stereo system during the exam. After the exam a radiologist will prepare a report for your physician that will be forwarded to his or her office.

Patient Preparation:

    1. There are no special preparations required for an MRI scan. However, if you are having a scan of your abdomen and/or pelvis you should not eat 4 hours prior to the exam. Medications prescribed by your doctor should be taken.
    2. Dress comfortably for the exam. It is preferred that certain clothing not be worn when specific areas are scanned.
For example:
    • Head: No hair spray, makeup, necklaces or earrings
    • Shoulder: No necklaces or bra unless sports bra
    • Spine: No zippers, belts, bra (unless sports) wear sweat suit type clothing
    • Hip/Pelvis: No zippers/belts, wear sweats
    • Knee: No jeans

A gown will be provided if needed.

Precautions

    1. People with pacemakers or aneurysm clips in the brain will not be scanned.
    2. Those who are pregnant, have artificial heart valves or any other surgically implanted metal devices should notify the imaging center to see if it is possible and safe to have an MRI.
    3. Some scans require dye to clarify images. Please notify the imaging center if you have any allergies.
