Osteoporosis, or porous bones, is known as "the silent thief" because it steals minerals from your skeleton without symptoms or pain until a bone breaks. It is a common misconception that osteoporosis is an inevitable part of growing older. Fortunately, prevention strategies are simple and practical lifestyle choices. These include a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D and weight bearing exercises that work the bones against gravity. Not smoking and limiting alcohol intake will also help your bones stay strong.

Food sources rich in calcium include fat-free yogurt, skim milk, canned sardines, dried figs, cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, broccoli, almonds, green leafy vegetables, salmon, and calcium fortified orange juice. Risk factors for osteoporosis includer gender,( women more than men), age, family history, ethnicity, (Caucasian and Asian are at highest risk), body size and lifestyle.

To determine if you have osteoporosis Bone Densitometry has become the gold standard. Sometimes referred to as a DEXA scan (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) bone densitometry is the test for the evaluation of osteoporosis. It is a low-dose x-ray that checks for signs of mineral loss and bone thinning. To schedual a DEXA scan at DRA call our Waterbury office at 203-756-8911. For more information about osteoporosis log onto the National Osteoporosis website at http://www.nof.org/

In magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), the strength of the magnet that is used to create the images plays a big role in determining what those images look like. The stronger the magnet is, the more force it exerts on the protons in our bodies, causing them to give off stronger radio waves that produce sharper images in a shorter amount of time. The unit used to measure the strength of a magnet is called a tesla (T), named for Dr. Nikola Tesla, one of the pioneering scientists who investigated the uses of electromagnetism.

Since the mid 1980's, the strongest magnets that could be used clinically for MRI were made with a magnetic field strength of 1.5T. It has been known for a long time that using a stronger magnet would produce better images in a shorter amount of time, but the technical difficulties associated with using strong magnets took decades to overcome. The engineering difference between an MRI machine at 1.5T versus MRI at 3T is like the difference between making a car that can go 100 miles per hour versus one that can go 200 miles per hour. The technical challenges have finally been resolved and the 3T MRI machines have been perfected at last, so we are very pleased to be able to bring this exciting new technology to the Waterbury community.

It's October and you know what that means – Breast Cancer Awareness Month! October is the month that really brings breast cancer awareness front and center. Everyone goes pink – remember the NFL and their pink sneakers, oops, cleats last year? There will be pink everywhere and DRA is no exception. Look for the pink banner hanging on our 134 Grandview Avenue location for the month of October. We hope hat is acts as a reminder to all women who drive by to schedule their yearly mammogram. We know you have heard it a million times but it is the honest truth – EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES.

We also want to bring to the attention of all women the importance of knowing your breast tissue density particularly for women having mammograms for the first time (your baseline). A mammogram determines the density of your breast tissue and according to Connecticut General Statutes Sections 38a-503 and 38a-530 your insurance company is required to provide coverage (payment depends upon your deductible) for comprehensive ultrasound screenings of an entire breast or breasts if a mammogram demonstrates heterogeneous or dense breast tissue based on the BIRADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) established by the American College of Radiology (ACR) of which DRA has accreditation. At DRA we can schedule your mammogram and ultrasound together for your convenience.

Also available for complete breast health is DRA's new 3T MRI breast scanning at our Middlebury office. If your physician orders a MRI tell him/her that you want to go to DRA in Middlebury because new 3T MRI technology is:

More sensitive to small abnormalities

Images breast implants and ruptures

Improves assessment of the extent of breast cancer

Helps determine the type of surgery needed

Includes CAD (computer aided detection) technology

Breast biopsies on site

Our new 3T MRI is patient friendly with the widest opening of any 3T MRI available it is ideal for claustrophobic and anxious patients. The unsurpassed image quality provides the highest level of diagnostic confidence. We are now open evenings, Monday thru Thursdays until 9:00pm and Saturdays 8:00am – 2:00pm.

Last, but certainly not least, October means the new DRA Women's Personal Planners have arrived and are available at DRA in Waterbury and Middlebury. The calendars are available to all DRA patients, healthcare providers and friends!
