Bone Mineral
Density Measurement
Bone mineral
density (BMD) measurement is a test that measures the amount of
calcium in certain bones, assess the severity of osteoporosis and
can estimate the risk for fracture. BMD is also referred to as bone
densitometry. This test is easy, fast, painless and non-invasive.
A BMD may be
recommended for the following reasons:
-
If
an x-ray shows low bone mass (osteopenia) or possibly osteoporosis
-
Women
who experience early menopause
-
Women
over age 65
-
A
family history of osteoporosis
-
Post-menopausal
women who sustain a fracture · Patients who take steroids regularly
We offer two types
of BMD studies. One is Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry or DEXA. DEXA
is the most common method used. The other study is a Quantitative
Computed Tomography or QCT. Both studies can accurately measure BMD
and do not require any preparation.
A technologist
will assist you onto a padded table. There is no need to change your
clothing. A particular body part will be scanned. The scan time is
short-several minutes. A radiologist will prepare a report for your
physician and forward it to his or her office.
Precautions:
- Because x-ray
is used for these studies you should inform the doctor or technologist
if there is any possibility that you are pregnant.
